No Ducts, No Problem
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump split into two parts — a compact indoor unit that handles one room or zone, and an outdoor unit connected to it by a small line set. No ductwork, no tearing into ceilings, and no losing conditioned air to leaky runs in an unheated attic.
Because each indoor unit is controlled independently, you heat and cool the rooms you’re actually in. And because they run on electricity, every hour they run is an hour your solar array can offset.

It’s the first question everyone asks, and it’s a fair one — older heat pumps really did struggle in the cold. The cold-climate Daikin systems we install are ENERGY STAR certified to cold-climate requirements, and the numbers are no longer close.

Where They Earn Their Keep
Mini-splits are the obvious answer wherever running ductwork is impractical, ugly or plain impossible:
- Renovations, remodels, additions and new build
- Sun rooms, basements, attics, garages and shops
- That one room that’s always too hot or too cold
- Rooms where floor space is at a premium
- Homes where the attic or ceiling void gives no viable duct run
- Replacing noisy, inefficient window or through-the-wall AC units
What Actually Gets Installed
One outdoor unit, and one or more indoor units sized to the rooms they serve. Indoor capacities generally run from 9,000 to 24,000 BTU; which style and size suits your home is what the site assessment is for.
Wall-Mounted Indoor Units
The most common choice. Slim, quiet, and mounted high on the wall so it stays out of the way. Airflow is directed so it isn’t blowing straight at anyone.
Floor-Standing Units
For rooms with limited wall space, low ceilings, or big windows running most of the wall. Sits at floor level and works the same way.
The Outdoor Unit
One outdoor unit can run several indoor zones. The heat exchanger carries an anti-corrosion hydrophilic coating, so a rinse with a hose keeps the coil clean.
What Makes The Newer Systems Different
Inverter Compressors
Variable-speed rather than on-off, so the system holds a steady temperature instead of overshooting. Daikin puts it at up to 30% lower energy use than a fixed-speed ducted system.
R-32 Refrigerant
Newer models run R-32, which carries a lower global warming potential than the R-410A it replaces, and is easier to reclaim and recycle at end of life.
Control From Your Phone
Wi-Fi is built into the indoor unit on newer models, so zones can be set from your phone rather than hunting for the remote.
Better Filtration
A titanium apatite photocatalytic filter combines air purifying and deodorizing in one unit — useful in a valley that gets its share of dust and smoke.
